Cloud Gate

Cloud Gate (commonly known as "the Bean" because of its appearance) is a public art sculpture designed by the British artist Anish Kapoor, located in the AT&T Plaza of Millennium Park in the Loop district of Chicago, Illinois, United States. Between the Chase Promenade and the McCormick Tribune Plaza & Ice Rink, it was constructed between June 2004 and May 2006. The work is 20 meters long, 13 meters wide, 10 meters high, the highest point of the arch is about 4 meters from the ground, and weighs 100 tons. Although the cloud gate is made of 168 stainless steel plates welded together, its surface is so smooth that visitors can see the reflected and distorted outline of the city on it, but the seam is completely invisible. In addition, the base of the statue is a concave space that distorts and overlaps the image, called the omphalos (Greek for "center").

The Cloud Gate, which Kapoor said was inspired by liquid mercury, was selected in a design competition, but there were many technical problems with its construction, assembly and maintenance, and some even thought it would be impossible to build. Although a solution was finally proposed after expert consultation, the statue was not completed in the expected time, so it was shown to the public in an unfinished form at the opening of Millennium Park in 2004, and the completed work is now very well-known in the United States and internationally.
